United Nations: The UN General Assembly has through a resolution recognized that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic represents one of its greatest challenges since the UN came into existence.
“The General Assembly [recognizes] that the COVID-19 pandemic is one of the greatest global challenges in the history of the United Nations,” the resolution adopted on Friday said.
The resolution notes the devastating impact of the pandemic on health, lives, well being, human rights, livelihoods, food security, humanitarian needs, education, poverty and the global economy.
The resolution states that the pandemic is reversing gains that had been made globally under the framework of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The resolution notes the vital role played by health and other front line workers in tackling the challenge posed by the pandemic. It also highlights with concern the spread of discrimination, hate speech and xenophobia, as well disinformation and propaganda on the internet in connection to the pandemic.
The resolution was supported by 169 member states. The United States and Israel voted against its adoption, while Ukraine and Hungary abstained.
