Srinagar: A teenager from Kupwara committed suicide by jumping into the river Jhelum in Srinagar, while police foiled an attempt by a minor girl to end her life in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal, official sources said.
They said panic gripped in Noorbagh area in the down town when a 17-year-old boy identified as Saqib Ahmad Ahangar, a resident of Kupwara, jumped into river Jehlum from Cement Kadal in Srinagar Friday evening.
However, a number of people present in the area also jumped into the river but could not save the boy.
It was not immediately known why the teenager, who was living as paying guest in Nawakadal area of down town, took this extreme step, they said adding that police has registered a case and initiated proceedings.
However, the class 11th student in a video shot before jumping into the river had sought forgiveness from his parents for taking this extreme step.
Meanwhile, timely action by a police patrolling party headed by Sub Inspector Gulzar Ahmad, of police post Shadipora saved the life of a minor girl who was about to jump into a river last night, a police spokesman said this morning.
He said police patrolling party found a girl at village Shalhar Dab, Ganderbal last night in a suspicious circumstances. However, after finding her movement doubtful, Gulzar Ahmad rushed towards her and prevented her from jumping into river. The parents of the girl were contacted and she was handed over to them after proper counselling.
