Removal of Dalit Women’s body from Pyre in Agra; Mayawati demands high-level probe

Lucknow: Denouncing the incident of the removal of a Dalit woman’s body from the pyre in Agra, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Tuesday demanded stringent action against the guilty and a high-level probe into the incident.
In a tweet, Ms Mayawati wrote, “the body of a Dalit woman, near Agra in UP, was removed from the pyre by upper caste people having casteist mentality, because that crematorium was of higher castes, which is extremely shameful and highly condemnable.”
She added that, “The UP government should initiate a high level probe into this casteist matter wherein the guilty should be given stringent punishment, so that such incidents don’t get repeated in the future, this is the BSP’s demand.”
The last rites of a Dalit woman were stopped by some people from the Agdi community in a village of the Achnera area in Agra on July 20. Police also reached the spot to solve the matter but in vain. Later, the woman’s body was taken down from the pyre. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bablu Kumar has ordered a probe into the incident.
In another tweet expressing grief on the death of a Dalit doctor from coronavirus in Delhi, the BSP honcho appealed the government to help the deceased doctor’s family.
