NPP holds protest against dilapidated condition of Barmeen–Ghordi road

JKNPP Chairman Harsh Dev Singh addressing protestors at Barmeen, Udhampur on Wednesday.

UDHAMPUR: Accusing the govt and mandated leadership of having cheated the people of Ghordi Block in the names of double laning of Kaldi Barmeen–Ghordi road, a protest demonstration was held at Barmeen today.
The protestors who started assembling at Barmeen in the early hours of morning, blocked the main road to lodge their protest against the govt apathy in ensuring proper upkeep and maintenance of even the existing road which had been badly damaged at dozens of places resulting in frequent incidents.
The protestors raised slogans of “BJP sarkar murdabad, murdabad”, “Juthe vaade nahin chalenge, nahin chalenge”, “Bhartiya Jumla Party Hai Hai” etc.
Addressing the gathering, Harsh Dev Singh Chairman-JKNPP and former Minister accused the concerned authorities of PWD and the elected representatives of the area of criminal negligence in ensuring proper repairs of the Barmeen–Ghordi road. He said that the extremely pathetic condition of the said road which is full of potholes and damaged retaining walls posed a huge risk to the commuters and other vehicles plying thereupon. He said that several accidents had failed to awaken the govt functionaries who had floundered in taking the much needed action despite repeated public representations. With dozens of complaints to concerned officers having fallen on deaf ears, the people were left with no alternative but to resort to agitation courses”, Singh stated .
Reminiscing the statement made by Union Surface Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari in Ghordi village during 2014, Singh revealed that the Union Minister had assured an early construction of a double lane from Kaldi Barmeen to Ghordi, Ramnagar road. He regretted that rather than constructing the double lane, the government had failed to keep even the existing single road in trafficable condition. The contractor who had been assigned the upkeep and up-gradation work of the said road in 2017-18 had abandoned the work around two years back and caused massive destruction to the existing stretches besides damaging the irrigation kanals and water reservoirs of PHE constructed adjacent to the said road.
He regretted that no action was taken even against the executing agency for having given up the work midway in violation of agreement due to a corrupt politician–officer–contractor nexus prevailing in the Deptt.
Seeking immediate restoration of work over the said road and its expeditious double laning, Singh cautioned of a full scale agitation in case the deptt concerned faltered in addressing the most coveted demand of the people. He said that with around 30,000 souls of the Ghordi Block affected by the said road, the matter was required to be addressed on priority with a time assurance for its completion by the authorities concerned.
