MP Namgyal raises demands for Ice Hockey Recognition, Academy in Ladakh

New Delhi: Member of Parliament from Ladakh Lok Sabha Constituency Jamyang Tsering Namgyal on Friday during the Zero Hour raised voice with a matter of urgent public importance in Parliament and demands for Recognition of Ice Hockey Game as National Sports in India through Council of India by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. Of India and Support from National Ice Hockey Association of India (IHAI) for providing needed facilities as equal recognition like other recognised games and sports.
The MP also demanded Opening of full-fledged Ice Hockey Academy in Ladakh through.
Speaking on the issue the MP said, “being one of the young Members of this august house, I want to catch the attention of the Government to the Youth and Sports especially Ice Hockey which has very significance all over the world as winter sport and being played in Ladakh”.
“Since 2009 India’s Men National Team participating in Asian Challenge Cap which is annual international sports held by IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation). In 2017 Indian’s Men Team representing India won the Silver Medal in Asian Challenge Cup which was held at Kuwait and our players make India proud at international level”, MP JTN applauded.
“But, unfortunately, due to non-recognition of the Ice Hockey in our own country, the player suffers a lot. They are unable to get the benefit of their certificates like the sports quotas in various government departments”, JTN lamented.
Stressing upon the Government of India, he demanded, “it is very important to recognise Ice Hockey as one of the Recognised Sports in India so that the players get benefited from it. The Tournament Organisers like Ladakh Winter Sport Club and others organisers should be provided financial support from to organise training camps and to send the teams for participating in the international tournaments”.
“An Ice Hockey Academy should be established in Ladakh by the Govt. of India”, he further demanded.
