Militant Killed In Shopian, Valley Witness Three Encounters In One Day

A militant was killed in a brief encounter with security forces in south Kashmir district of Shopian today evening.

This is the second encounter in south Kashmir and third in the valley since this morning.
Official sources said that following specific information about presence of militants, a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police and security forces in village Handew in Shopian this evening.

However, they said when security forces were moving toward a particular area, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons. ”The security forces retaliated, ensuing in a brief exchange of fire,” they said, adding one militant was killed in the encounter.

Firing has stopped though search operation is going on in the area, the sources said.
Earlier in the day, a top commander of the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) was among three militants killed while a civilian and a jawan died in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Pulwama.

Meanwhile, an encounter is underway between militants and security forces in the forest areas in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara.
