Large number of people attend last rites of sarpanch killed by militants

Srinagar: Large number of people, including senior Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, joined the last journey of Sarpanch who was shot dead by militants at Vessu in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Thursday morning.
However, police said sarpanch Sajjad Ahmad Khanday had left secured migrant camp for house without informing the police.
Hundreds of people from Vessu and other nearby areas joined the funeral procession of Khanday and also joined the “ Nimaz Jinazah” today.
Senior BJP leaders, including Sofi Mohammad Yousuf and Altaf Thakur, attended the last rites of Khanday who was killed by militants near his house this morning.
Women mourners in large numbers also visited the house of Khanday and express solidarity with the family of the deceased sarpanch.
Meanwhile, a police spokesman said this evening that today at about 0930 hours Kulgam Police received information that a BJP sarpanch was fired upon militants at Vessu. Senior police officers reached at the crime spot immediately, he said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that militants fired upon a BJP Sarpanch identified as Sajad Ahmad Khanday son of Ali Mohammad, resident of Vesoo Kulgam due to which he got injured. He was shifted to nearby hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries. The said Sarpanch was accommodated in secured migrant camp Vesoo but today he went to his house without informing police.
Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this crime.
