Asserting that Jammu and Kashmir is one of the richest states in the country in terms of flora and fauna, Governor Satya Pal Malik, however, said the green cover of the state has reduced, due to corruption.

Meanwhile, mesmerised by the beauty of Dachigam, the Governor said the national park is unlike any other place in the country, as it has zero per cent population.

‘Jammu and Kashmir is one of the richest states in the country in terms of flora and fauna. The state has all kinds of plants, including medicinal plants,’ Mr Malik told reporters, after a plantation driver at Zabarwan Hills in Gupkar road on Monday.

‘But the green cover of the state has reduced due to corruption in Forest department. The people who were In-charge of this department, have bungalows in posh areas in Delhi, besides have illegally acquired crores of rupees,’ he added.

The Governor said no one was bothered to protect forests in the state and they were destroyed by these people, for their personal greed.

‘Just in the city outskirts there is a place – Dachigam, which has zero per cent pollution. I’m sure this is unlike any other place in the country, where there is no pollution,’ he said.

Mr Malik said his administration has set a target of planting 50 lakh plants to increase the green cover in the state.

‘We will also ensure that these plants are not only planted, but protected,’ he added.
