Bareilly: Several policemen, including an IPS officer, were injured when a police team ensuring compliance with the ongoing nationwide lockdown was attacked by some untoward elements in the Izzatnagar area here on Monday.
Superintendent of Police (City) Ravindra Singh said that two policemen had gone to enforce the coronavirus lockdown in Karampur Chaudhary village near Izzatnagar Police Station in Bareilly when they were attacked by the locals.
After the policemen returned to barrier one stationed near the outpost, a crowd of about 200-250 people reached the spot and pelted stones at them.
He said that a part of the mob also tried to burn down the chowki after the police called in more force to enter the village.
In retaliation, the cops used mild force to disperse the agitated mob.
Eight people, including women, have been arrested from the spot with a case registered into the matter.
IPS officer Abhishek Verma and other policemen who were injured in the incident have been sent to the district hospital for treatment.
The SP said that they have recorded the entire episode which will help them identify the people involved via drone camera inspection.
“Action will be initiated against them under the National Security Act (NSA),” he added.
