Indian men’s hockey team beats Germany, wins bronze after 41 years

Tokyo: After 1980 Moscow Olympics, India has won its first Olympic medal in men’s hockey beating Germany 5-4 to claim the bronze in the Tokyo Olympics. India has had to wait long 41 years for an Olympic medal in hockey since 1980.

Simranjeet Singh (17th, 34th minutes) Hardik Singh (27th), Harmanpreet Singh (29th) and Rupinder Pal Singh (31st) scored the goals for India.

Germany’s goals were scored by Timur Oruz (2nd), Niklas Wellen (24th), Benedikt Furk (25th) and Lukas Windfeder (48th).

It is India’s third hockey bronze medal in the history of Olympics. The other two came in 1968 Mexico City and the 1972 Munich Games.

Overall, Indian men’s hockey team has won 12 medals at the Olympics – eight golds, one silver and three bronze.
