GNDU retains overall trophy in Inter-University Fencing

JAMMU: The formidable side of famous Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) today retained the overall championship trophy when they secured highest 34 points in the All India Inter-University Fencing (Men) Championship which was organised by University of Jammu (JU) under the banner of Association of Indian Universities (AIU), here.
With equal 11 points each in their respective accounts, BR Ambedkar University Aurangabad and Shivaji University Kolhapur remained second and third spot respectively.
Advisor to Lt Governor, Farooq Khan was the chief guest, who awarded the title trophies and other individual prizes. Vice Chancellor, JU, Prof Manoj K Dhar presided over the function.
Speaking to the gathering, Farooq Khan congratulated the organizers and appreciated the mass participation of the players and officials accompanying their teams from various Universities.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Manoj Kumar Dhar while congratulating the winning teams, said that sports activities help to engage the energy of the youth in a positive manner.
Earlier, Director, Sports and Physical Education, JU, Dr Daud Iqbal Baba presented the report of the event. He disclosed that around 600 fencers, representing 63 teams from the various Universities across the country, took part in the event.
The Results (Individual): EPEE: Udaivir Singh, GNDU Amritsar and Lenin Meetei, LPU Phagwara secured Ist and 2nd positions respectively. SABRE: Sehajpreet Singh, GNDU Amritsar and Aditya Angal, Shivaji University Kolhapur clinched Ist and 2nd positions respectively.
FOIL: Team Event: FOIL: GNDU Amritsar and Dr BR Ambedkar University, Aurangabad secured first and 2nd position respectively while Shivaji University, Kolhapur and University of Jammu shared 3rd position. EPEE: GNDU Amritsar and LPU University Phagwara secured first and 2nd position respectively while Kurukshetra University and Punjabi University Patiala shared 3rd position. SABRE: GNDU Amritsar and Shivaji University Kolhapur secured first and 2nd position respectively while University of Jammu got 3rd place.
Prominent among others present were Prof Naresh Padha (Dean Academic Affairs), Prof Rajnikant (Registrar JU), Prof Kulwant Singh (Director DDE), Dr Neeraj Sharma (Special Secretary to the VC), Dr Dharminder Mangotra (Joint Registrar), Prof Yograj Sharma, Udhay Dongre (Observer of AIU), Aman Sharma (Observer of Khelo India), Shotu Lal Sharma (Fencing coach), Rashid Ahmed (International Referee) and Captain Sarweshwar Dubey (Security Officer JU).
