KARGIL: Village Yougar, a 10 Household Hamlet located in the Lungnak valley of Zanskar, received Solar grid based clean electricity for the first time from the expedition team members of Global Himalayan Expedition. The village is located in front of the famous Ancient Heritage of Phugtal Monastery and has been in darkness for centuries. There is no road to the village and can only be accessed through a bridge made by wooden sticks that can only carry one person at a time.

The villagers helped in the transportation of the solar microgrid material and a 10 member global team from Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE) travelled from Leh to Zanskar and then trekked to the village to bring electricity for the first time. It took three day and the village finally was illuminated. The installation comprised of DC LED lights and LED street lights making this an energy efficient installation. Some of the villagers also requested for LED HD colour TV, which was installed along with Satellite Setup box.
GHE Team Leader, Gaurav Gaur mentioned, ‚ÄúThis has been a joint effort between the community and GHE to bring light to Yougar for the first time. For any project to succeed, community has to pay a larger role in making this a sustainable model of execution.”
The same team had electrified Phugtal Monastery in 2016 and have been working in Leh and Kargil Districts since 2013.
