Chani to become 1st Model Millet village in J&K

UDHAMPUR :  With a motive to boost Millet production, the Chani Village in Udhampur district is set to become first Model Millet village in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Department of Agriculture Production and Farmer’s Welfare District Udhampur has organised an awareness camp regarding Millet Cultivation at village Chani of Majalta Zone, Sub Division Ramnagar to develop it as Model Millet Village, which is unique of its own kind in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

An official of Agriculture department said that to celebrate year 2023 as international year of millets, the mandate of popularizing the millets, their dietary importance and health benefits, ecological suitability and positive impact of millet cultivation in maintaining the rich bio-diversity of the ecosystem were highlighted.

The camp was organised under the overall guidance of Director Agriculture Jammu K K Sharma.

After deliberations, around 150 farmers expressed keen interest in cultivation of Millets and accordingly seeds of different Millets like Finger Millet, Pearl Millet, Kodo Millet, Barnyard Millet and Little Millet have been distributed with proper knowhow regarding following of cultivation practices and their future contribution to nutritional food security as per the present scenario and future prospects.

The camp was attended by Sarpanch Chani Surishta Devi along with all the PRIs.

Besides Chief Agriculture Officer Sanjay Anand, the Officers present were Kuldeep Singh, SDAO Ramnagar; Surinder Gupta, SMS; Jyoti Parkash SMS; Sanjeevan Singh, AEO Majalta along with Amit Dubey, AEA and Sunanda Magotra, AEA were among field supervisors of the campaign.
