Army pays tribute to soldier who slipped to death near LoC in Gurez sector

Srinagar: The Army on Saturday paid rich tribute to a soldier, who died after slipping into a deep gorge near the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez sector in border district of Bandipora.
An Army official said that a soldier, identified as Subadar Yamuna Prasad Paneru, slipped and fell into a deep gorge during patrolling near Rekha forward post of Chakwali Tulail in Gurez on Thursday. “A search and rescue operation was immediately launched,” he said.
However, he said the soldier had died on the spot, adding the body of the deceased was airlifted to Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar.
He said the gallant soldier, who was part of 6 Maratha infantry Regiment, was on Saturday paid a befitting tribute by the Army in a solemn ceremony at Badami Bagh Cantonment.
“General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 15 Corps (Chinar Corps) Lt General B S Raju and all ranks paid homage to the soldier on behalf of a proud nation,” he said.
He said Subadar Paneru was an accomplished mountaineer and had conquered Mt Everest, Nandadevi and Kailash.
