The All J&K Panchayat Conference has held the protest and demand of the DDC Members unjustified- and unethical. While talking to Greater Jammu in Jammu today, chairman, AJKPC, Anil Sharma said that it was very unfortunate that the DDC members boycotted the recent two-day workshop  organized by the government on petty issues. He said that instead of talking about development and public issues, DDC members were talking about  honorarium, personal benefits and protocol.  He said that both Central Government and LG administration was concentrating on  grass root level democracy in J&K and taking exceptional steps to ensure the same, but the DDC members had insulted the people’s mandate with their irresponsible act.

It is worthwhile to mention here that recently various political parties, including the BJP, the Congress, the CPIM and the Peoples Conference, came out in support of the agitating DDC members and urged Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to ensure they got adequate powers to mobilize government departments and address public grievances. But now the DDC members are facing criticism from certain quarters who term their agitation as politically motivated and self- centred.

Anil Sharma further said that AJKPC also demanded that more powers should be given to panchayats to make the grass- root level democracy more powerful. Sharma said that the government had promised them to give  more powers to Panchayti Raj in J&K, but so far nothing has been done. This has severely affected the developmental process in the UT.

The COVID 19 pandemic laid its impact on almost every sector, but the transport sectors especially associated with tourism industry are the worst sufferers. In a joint press conference addressed by the All J&K, Taxi/Cab Transporters Federation and Kashmir Auto Rikshaw Drivers Association made an appeal to the LT Governor Manoj Sinha to pay immediate attention towards their grievances. The chairman of the organization, Anchal Singh said that keeping in view the genuine concerns, Government should waive token tax/passengers tax, rental of stands leased out by the State/Central Government departments. Moreover, he also demanded one time amnesty for the late fee of renewal of fitness permits and licenses. The  organization also demanded that the Government should consider taxi/cab and autorickshaw drivers for financial support for upgradation of their vehicles as applicable to commercial transporters and extension of life of vehicles plying in UT J&K from 15 to 25 years. Talking to Greater Jammu correspondent, Anchal Singh also demanded creation of uninterrupted travel corridors for popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonmarg in Kashmir division and Mata Vaishno Devi, Patni Top and Bhaderwah in the Jammu division.

Anchal Singh also demanded that Government should abolish more than one toll tax/entry fee/parking fee for the entire major tourist destination. He urged the LT Governor to declare transport as an industry in the upcoming transport policy of J&K. . He further said that one of their vital demands was the announcement of financial aid, grant for taxi and autorickshaw operators for the COVID 19 pandemic period. He said that if their genuine demands would not be considered,  they would be compelled to come out on theroads in days to come.

BJP leaders pursuing politics of money & power: Harsh Dev Singh

Referring to the movement launched by the BJP for enhancement of salaries of the DDC members besides a higher protocol for them,  Harsh Dev Singh JKNPP Chairman and former minister, said that the saffron leadership has all along played politics for vested interest and self aggrandizement. It was shocking to note that rather than espousing the cause of their electorate after manouvering victory of its DDC candidates in recent elections, the BJP leaders were attempting to brow-beat the administration for promotion of their personal interests. Rather than seeking a fair deal for the people who had voted for them in the elections, they were pressurizing the government to increase their perks and privileges, said . Singh. “Not a word was uttered about the pathetic plight of daily rated workers of PHE, PWD, PDD, NHM, MGNREGA, Anganwadi and Asha Workers who have been  working for a negligible honorarium for the last several years. Several DRWs had been deprived of their wages for months and years together with none in the goverment to even listen to their tale of woes”, regretted Mr. Singh. He was addressing a press conference in Jammu today.

Strongly denouncing the opportunistic politics of power and money hungry leaders of BJP,  Singh said that such selfish leaders stood fully exposed before the people not once but on several occasions. He reminisced that in 2015 also the BJP-PDP government had doubled the salaries of legislators from Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 1,60,000 per month due to the pressure mounted by such corrupt leaders and now the very same party was in the forefront of protest seeking higher emoluments and higher protocol.

Decrying the lack of concern shown by the elected leadership towards the genuine concerns of the poor masses and rural populace who voted them to power, . Singh said that the conduct of such leaders had disappointed the common masses. The Panchayats had been deprived of their due funding with liabilities for works done under MGNREGA bourgeoning year after year and the elected members regretfully maintaining criminal silence over the issue. It was sad to note that the elected BJP leaders had failed to raise the issue before the concern authorities for clearance of the dues of job card holders and other MGNREGA workers in various Panchayats. There were no takers for the shrill cries of the Panchayat members and other rural workers who were seeking early payment of their dues pending for years. Likewise the developmental works in rural areas had come to a grinding halt. The condition of rural roads, water supply works, power sector, health and education was highly deplorable and still none to project the woes of the rural masses, maintained Mr. Singh.

Meanwhile DDC member of Panthers Party from Dudu-Basantgarh,  Ashri Devi on Friday addressed a press conference wherein she stated that she stood for the cause of the people and welfare of her electorates and was not a part of those DDC members who were seeking higher salary and higher protocol for themselves. She said that her only objective was to serve the people who had reposed faith in her with all her heart and soul. She urged the government to enhance the wages of daily wagers and minimum wages of the labour class. She said that she would continue to fight for the poor and marginalized sections of society and continue to expose the opportunist and corrupt leaders of BJP.

Mr. Gagan Pratap Singh, Mr. Parshotam Parihar (State Secretaries-JKNPP), Mr. Surinder Chouhan (District President Jammu Rural) and Gurdeep Singh (Youth Secretary Jammu Rural) were also present in the press conference.
