New pictorial warnings to be mandatorily displayed on tobacco products from Dec 1, 2020

New Delhi: The Centre has issued two new sets of specified health warnings for all tobacco product packs through an amendment in the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products.
The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Thursday has directed for more alarming pictorial warnings notification to be carried on all cigarette packs from December 1, 2020.
All tobacco products manufactured, imported or packaged from December 2020 shall display these images. The existing health warning shall continue till November 30.
The Health Ministry has notified the new sets of health warnings by making an amendment in the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules, 2008 applicable with effect from December 1, 2020.
The notification said “Any person engaged directly or indirectly in the manufacture, production, supply, import or distribution of cigarettes or any tobacco products shall ensure that all tobacco product packages shall have the specified health warnings exactly as prescribed.”
Violation of the provision carries imprisonment or fine under Section 20 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003, the notification warned.
