JAMMU : Security Forces averted a major tragedy by killing four terrorists in an encounter and recovering a huge cache of arms and ammunitions including 7 AK 47 rifles, 1 M4 American Rifle and 3 Pistols from the truck loaded with straw in which they were hiding while heading to Kashmir Valley along with the Arms and ammunition.
On Wednesday early morning Jammu Kashmir Police noticed an unusual movement of Truck at Sidhra on Kunjwani-Nagrota bypass National Highway on outskirts of Jammu City.
“There was an unusual movement of a truck in the area. Police stopped and intercepted the truck at check post. As security forces started searching the truck, terrorist hiding inside fired at security forces. All the terrorists were killed in retaliatory fire,” said Mukesh Singh, Additional Director General of police Jammu.
Police said the truck caught fire in the gun battle and fire tenders were called to douse the flames. However the truck driver managed to escape and the area was cordon off to search the absconding driver.
GOC 26 Div Maj Gen Gaurav Gautam briefed media that four terrorists have been killed in an encounter in Sidhra areas in Jammu, 07 AK-47 riles, one M4 rifle, 03 Pistols along with other ammunition were recovered. Truck owner is yet to be identified. Truck driver is yet to be identified and truck was going from Jammu to Srinagar whereas search still on.
According to a press note issued by the J&K Police with Republic Day approaching near and considering previous history of interception of terrorists during this time, the Border Security grid was strengthened in Jammu Province. Two weeks back a huge consignment of arms and ammunition was also recovered from a truck in Narwal area of Jammu. Considering these developments, a high alert had been sounded in all districts of Jammu province. Today, at around 7:25 AM, suspicious movement of a truck was observed on the NH in Sidhra area. This truck was intercepted by a joint team of Police and Army at Sidhra Naka. During checking of the vehicle, the hiding terrorists fired upon the security forces and an encounter started. Taking advantage, the driver of the truck fled away from the spot. In the encounter which followed, four terrorists were eliminated and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered. The recoveries include 7 AK-47 rifles, 1 M-4 rifle, 1 pistol, 14 Grenades and around fifty thousand rupees in cash along with ammunition and pouches. The Truck owner is yet to be identified and the number plate of the truck has been found to be fake. The engine and chassis number has also been tampered and help of forensic teams will be sought in this regard. A manhunt has been launched to apprehend the driver. Search is being carried out at bus stands, railway stations and market places and all Nakas have been alerted.
The press note further states that scrutiny of seized items is being done to obtain clues about the identity of killed terrorists and the driver. Other scientific and electronic evidence is being collected to identify the terror group to which the terrorists belonged and to identify the OGW support structure of these terrorists.
Meanwhile an FIR has been registered in this regard and investigation started.
