AI BOON OR BANE…?

While technology has always brought with it both boons and banes, there has always been a need for estab- lishing a system and modus operandi that ensures that boon outscores the bane. The latest technology that has been a matter of intense debate during the past few years has been that of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is expected to play a vital role in every field of life. Though the technology is already in use in the form of robots being used across the globe for performing various simple as well as complex tasks i.e. from handling sales counters at departmental stores to performing surgeries in the operation theatres, yet there are worries and concerns too. A major worry about artificial intelligence is that it has the full potential of snatching away the existing jobs, replacing larger human work force as robotics delivers more sophisticated robots requiring much less human assistance or interference. As a result of this there is every probability that majority of non-managerial positions will be at risk in future. A meticulous analysis of the use of artificial intelligence that has perhaps grabbed the most eye-balls across the globe reveals that it is no less than a double-edged sword having advan- tages and drawbacks. While on one hand artificial intelligence helps in accomplishing works with more efficiency and effec- tiveness besides being cost effective as well as time saving, at the same time, it has the full potential of usurping the employ- ment of millions of people worldwide, irrespective of their job profile. According to study by an international organization 40 million and 160 million women worldwide may need transition of occupations by 2030 due to steady ingress of artificial intel- ligence in almost every sector. While this will result in higher demands for jobs related to robotics science, engineering etc, the number of people rendered unemployed due to automation would be highly disproportionate to those who would be employed due to artificial intelligence. However there seems to be a silver-lining around the cloud pointing out that robots are not taking our jobs, but in fact redefining them. The reason for this is that robots require training to recognize patterns of data and to put them into working. This means that humans will always remain key in that process by providing supply inputs, telling these systems how to properly interpret the data so that correct outputs are achieved and so on. Moreover, there is also a need to look beyond job security, especially when some experts are of the opinion that artificial intelligence endangers the very survival of human beings in case there is loss of con- trol of artificial intelligence systems. Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking has opined that the development of full arti- ficial intelligence could spell the end of human race. Some experts have even gone to the extent of saying proceeding fur- ther with artificial intelligence means summoning the demon that will ultimately assume the dimension of biggest existential threat on the earth. So far as India is concerned which has the largest work force after China, artificial intelligence is going to be a big challenge in future especially on account of resultant job losses. A report prepared by NITI Aayog titled ‘National Strategy on Artificial Intelligence’, has already exhaustively dis- cussed the challenges, focus areas viz-a-viz the global devel- opments in this field, which indicates that the government is fully seized of the concerns on this count and is seemingly in the process of preparing a road map to address the coming challenges. It is hoped that while addressing job loss issue due to artificial intelligence in this decade, the government will also focus on ensuring that a fine balance is maintained in pro- ducing the systems that definitely need to be intelligent but not fully autonomous for which scientists will have to proceed with utmost caution while deciding the degree of autonomy to be allowed in the artificial intelligence systems so that there is left no scope for them to go out of control.
