Admissions for UG/PG programmes in universities, colleges likely through CUET in academic session 2023-24

JAMMU:  The Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir are likely to be encouraged by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to offer admission using Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-Under Graduate (UG) in the upcoming academic session/year 2023-24.

Pertinently, all Central Universities have utilised the CUET for undergraduate admissions for the academic year 2022–2023. However, CUET-UG still does not have jurisdiction over a sizable number of private and public universities across States/UTs.

As before, class XII marks were used to determine admission to these universities and colleges. These private and state-level colleges will now be encouraged to offer admission using CUET-UG in the upcoming academic session 2023–2024.

Sources said in Jammu Division, admissions of the students in the academic session 2023-24 to pursue UG/PG programmes in both the University of Jammu (JU) and its affiliated colleges and Cluster University of Jammu (CLUJ) and its Constituent Colleges most likely to be done through CUET only. Last year, the universities as well as colleges got away with the CUET but this time, it is unlikely to happen.

Sources added that UGC will consult with these colleges and universities to include universities that aren’t central universities in the CUET procedure. According to the UGC, 91 universities nationwide, including 45 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), offered undergraduate admissions last year based on the CUET procedure. Other universities besides central universities are reportedly exhibiting interest in participating in this new approach.

As already announced, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will hold the CUET-UG exam from May 21 to May 31, 2023. As many as 1000 testing centres will be set up nationwide for smooth conduct of the examination. More private, state-run, and recognised universities are expected to take part in the Common University Entrance Test starting with the following session. The first week of February 2023 will mark the beginning of the application period for these exams.  However, CUET-PG 2023 is slated to take place around the first or second week of June 2023.

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to postgraduate (PG) courses will be conducted from June 1 to June 10, 2023. The application process is to start in mid-March 2023.

The exam will be conducted in computer-based test (CBT) mode in 13 languages which include Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. The UGC has asked all national institutions to finish their undergraduate and graduate admissions processes by the end of July 2023 in order for the academic year to begin on August 1, 2023.
