2 LeT militants killed in encounter with forces in Kupwara

Srinagar, Sep 11: Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the frontier district of Kupwara on Tuesday morning.
A police spokesperson said that following specific information about presence of militants in Guloora in Handwara, a joint CASO was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police, Army and CRPF.
However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons.
He said the security force retaliated, ensuing in an encounter.
Two LeT militants, identified as Furqan Rashid Lone allies Adil and Liyaqat Ahmad Lone allies Umar Khalid, were killed in the exchange of fire.
“Furqan, a resident of Shartpora, Langate, was affiliated with proscribed militant outfit LeT and was wanted in a number of criminal cases registered at Police Station Handwara,” he said.
He said Liyaqat, a resident of Harwan, Sopore, was also affiliated with LeT and had a long history of involvement in militant related activities and was wanted in a number of criminal cases, including kidnapping and rape of a minor local girl.
“Liyaqat along with other LeT militants Gani Khawaja resident of Kralgund and Majid Mir resident of Nowpora Sopore are involved in a murder of a person on September 8, 2018,” he added.
Meanwhile militants lobbed two grenades at an Army camp in the apple township of Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramulla on Tuesday.
Official sources said that militants fired two rifle grenades towards the camp of 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) in Sopore. However, they said the grenades missed the target and exploded outside the camp.
They said the militants managed to escape from the spot after the attack, adding that no one was injured in the incident.
Search operation has been launched in the area to nab the attackers, they added.
