Militants attack Rather’s house, Army vehicle

GJ REPORT SRINAGAR/JAMMU, AUG 28: Militants attacked the residence of senior National Conference (NC) leader and former Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather in Budgam district early this morning in a bid to snatch the rifles of the security guards. However, the alert security guards foiled the weapon snatching bid by responding to the attack. Police said the militants fired at the ancestral home of Rather in Badipora village. But, the guards retaliated, forcing the gunmen to flee the spot. “Rather was not present in the house at the time of the attack,”‘ they said, adding that no one was injured in the firing. In another incident, militants hurled a petrol bomb and fired indiscriminately at an Army patrol party in Pulwama district. No loss of life has been reported. A petrol bomb was hurled upon a Cordon And Search Operation (CASO) party of 44 Rashtriya Rifles followed by indiscriminate firing by militants between the area of Gad-Bough and Armullah in Pulwama district, a police official said. He said the forces’ party was coming from Sugan area of the neighbouring Shopian district after commencing a CASO and were moving towards their camp in Ahgam. The forces’ party retaliated, the official said. In another incident, a 29-year-old man was injured by unidentified gunmen in Pulwama district. official sources said unidentified gunmen fired at one Mohammad Amin, near his residence in Tral in Pulwama, resulting in injuries to him. The injured was immediately taken to a hospital, where his health condition is stated to be stable. The gunmen managed to escape from the spot, they said, adding security forces have been rushed and a search operation has been launched to nab the attackers. Meanwhile, Security forces busted a militant hideout and recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition in Bandipora district. Official sources said that following specific information, the security forces unearthed the hideout at Chanidagi in Bandipora. ”Huge quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from the hideout,” they said. No one was arrested. Police have registered a case and initiated investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, Security Forces launched search operation near Line of Control (LoC) in Nowshera. They have launched a major search operation in Namb and Kadali villages located on the LoC in Nowshera area of Rajouri district, reports said. An official said the operation was launched following “specific inputs” about the presence of suspected persons near the LoC.
