LEH, AUG 20: The first International Conference of the Save the Himalayas Foundation (SHF) titled ‘Saving the Himalayas through Science and Spirituality’ was held here.
Organised with the support of DLF Ltd, WWF-India, Defence Institute for High Altitude Research (DIHAR), HESCO, Global Interfaith WASH Alliance (GIWA) and LAHDC Leh, the conference was conducted at Arya Nagarjuna Auditorium Hall CIBS today. Swami Chidanand Saraswati, Founder, Parmarth Niketan Ashram was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Dr John Mobley, Executive Board Memebr, SHF, United States Representative informed that the first International Conference of the SHF aims to bring together an interdisciplinary consortium of experts focusing on current threats to the Himalayas, current conservation managements practices related to the Hlimalayas and facilitating sustainable projects for preserving the Himalayas.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhikkhu Sangasena, Founder-president for SHF & Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC) said, the Himalayas are the highest mountain range in the world and have the largest concentration of glaciers outside the polar caps. These glaciers feed seven of Asia’s great rivers and supply water to about one billion people. After three and half decades of working in the Himalayan region, he said that he gained firsthand understanding of the problems being faced by the region and its local communities and conceived the idea of establishing an organisation dedicated to addressing the threats faced by the Himalayas.
The Himalayas are facing threat from various sources therefore, such kind of conferences are important, he said.
On the occasion, various speakers highlighted the importance of saving the Himalayas.
Rishikesh, Sadhvi Bhagatwati Saraswati, Founder, Divine Shakti Foundation, Dr Vandana Shiva, Founder, Navdanya and other eminent dignitaries were present on the occasion.
