Teachers protest march in Srinagar foiled by Police

Srinagar: The protest march of teachers engaged under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and RMSA, demanding implementation of 7th pay commission, was foiled on Thursday by J&K Police. Hundreds of Zonal and District representative of teachers, including women, from different parts of the valley assembled at S K Park since early morning to join the march in support of their demands. However, when the teachers started their march on Residency road towards civil secretariat, security forces and state police personnel deployed in the area swung into action and prevented them to move ahead. However, when the teachers, under the banner of Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) continued their march, security forces used water cannons to disperse the protesting teachers. Dozens of protesting teachers were taken into preventive custody on the spot. EJAC president Abdul Qayoum Wani said the protest march was organized in support of demands of teachers, including implementation of 7th pay commission and delinking their salary from Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) funds. He threatened to intensify the agitation if government did not implement 7th pay commission and link their salaries with state budget.
