Four soldiers martyred, two infiltrators killed in Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 7: Four soldiers, including an officer, were martyred and two infiltrators were gunned down near the Line of Control (LoC) immediately after they sneaked into this side from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) in Gurez sector of Bandipora district on Tuesday.
The operation was still going on when the reports last came in, Defence Ministery spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said.
Official sources said that troops guarding the LoC noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from PoK in Gurez sector in north Kashmir district of Bandipora.
“When challenged and asked to surrender, the militants opened fire,” they said.
“The fire was returned and in the ensuing gun battle, two infiltrators were killed,” they said.
However, they said an Army officer and three soldiers were also killed in the exchange of fire. “The operation was still going on when the reports last came in,” they added.
Gurez sector is surrounded by PoK from three sides.
Meanwhile Pakistani troops on Tuesday violated ceasefire in Gurez sector in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, targeting forward posts on the Line of Control (LoC) and civilian areas.
Official sources said that Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing and shelling at around 0100 hrs, targeting forward posts on the LoC in Gurez, which is surrounded by Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) from three sides. Indian troops also retaliated.
“The exchange of fire continued till early this morning,” they said, adding there was no report of loss of life on this side of the LoC.
Meanwhile, the civilian population had been moved to safer places.
The Defence Ministry spokesperson was not available to confirm the ceasefire violation.
