Publicize emergency numbers to prevent child abuse: DSE

Jammu: In a bid to prevent Child Abuse and to counsel students in need of help and to ensure blanket ban on corporal punishment in schools, Director School Education Jammu has directed its subordinate offices to get emergency numbers and definition of Corporal Punishment as per National Commission For Protection Of Child Rights (NCPCR) guidelines permanently notified in every school in the form of display boards on school walls and notice boards.
“This initiative of Directorate will strengthen the reporting mechanism whereby children who are being subjected to any kind of abuse or maltreatment or students who need any kind of counselling and professional help, care and protection can contact the concerned officials,” said an official spokesman.
He said that the numbers which are being circulated in schools include number of police control room (100), helpline number of Childline India Foundation (1098), number of chairperson of child welfare committees in each district, number of nodal officers for child protection nominated from school education department, Helpline for protection of children against sexual offences and its online reporting mechanism, counselling helpline number (9419210200) of counselling cell at Directorate of School Education Jammu for tele-counselling.
“Display of definition of corporal punishment will make students aware about various forms of Child abuse, corporal punishment so that they don’t suffer in silence and ignorance. Moreover, it will sensitize teachers not to resort to even indirect forms of corporal punishment like discrimination, ridiculing, mental harassment etc,” he added.
The spokesman said that the order further directs the heads of institutions to take sessions with teachers to tell them the positive strategies for engaging students rather than resorting to corporal punishment of any kind.
