First Indian woman to win gold at IAAF World U-20 Athletics C’ships

New Delhi, Jul 13: Hima Das created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold at the IAAF World Under- 20 Athletics Championships in Tempere, Finland yesterday. She clinched the top spot in the women’s 400 meters final race on the third day of the competitions.
The 18-year-old Das clocked 51.46 seconds to win the gold. President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Hima Das for her historic win.
The President, in a tweet, called the achievement – a proud moment for India.
Modi said, India is delighted and proud of her. He said, this accomplishment will certainly inspire young athletes in the coming years.
Modi congratulated athlete Hima Das on winning a gold in the women’s 400m race in the World U20 Athletic Championships.
“India is delighted and proud of athlete Hima Das, who won a historic Gold in the 400m of World U20 Championships… This accomplishment will certainly inspire young athletes in the coming years”, the prime minister said on Twitter.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated the athlete saying it is a special and glorious moment in India’s sporting history. Sports Minister Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore said, she has made country proud.
The 18-year-old sprinter scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman athlete to win a gold at the world level. She clocked 51.46s to win the gold.
No woman before Das has won a gold medal in a World Championship at any level, be it youth, junior or senior.
She is also the first Indian to have won a gold in a track event at the world level.
Das hails from Dhing village in Assam’s Nagaon district. (Agencies)
