3rd Polo Festival starts in Leh

LEH, JUL 12: The 3rd weeklong Ladakh Polo Festival commenced at Shagaran, Chuchot here today. Organized by Indus Chuchot Polo Club in collaboration with J&K Cultural Academy Leh, with an aim to maintain heritage value of the game besides promoting tourism, the festival was inaugurated by EC Mumtaz Hussain, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Polo is a heritage game of Ladakh and the festival aims to preserve and promote it. The event has been organized with such an initiative to maintain the heritage value of the game in hearts of people, especially younger generation. The inaugural match, played between Chuchot Polo Club and Ladakh Scouts Red, was won by Ladakh Scouts Red by 8-0.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest said that the aim of holding event is to revive Polo alongwith promoting tourism in the valley. It will also provide an opportunity to unemployed youth for generating livelihood, as they can raise their stalls during the festival, he added.
Haji Mohamad Raza, Member of Chuchot Polo Club, said that the Polo is a heritage game of Ladakh but is losing its charm. The Organizing Committee is trying to revive the ancient game by holding the festival, he added.
On the occasion, different artists performed Ladakhi folk-dance and folk music. A popular local drama Abi -Apo (grandmother-grandfather) was also presented on the occasion. Traditional cuisines like Thukpa, Mok Mok, Chutai-sku, Kholak etc were also made available for visitors on the occasion.
Nominated Councillor, Sayeeda; members of Organizing Committee besides a number of sports lovers and locals were present on the occasion.
