Jammu, May 15: The Winter Capital of Jammu on Tuesday came to standstill as hundreds of Anganwari workers staged protest and blocked the busiest Tawi Bridge for hours.
The protest of Anganwari workers entered the 103rd day on Tuesday demanding enhancement in their honorarium at par with neighbouring States including Haryana, Punjab and New Delhi.
Shouting anti-government slogans, protesting Anganwari workers held a rally from outside the Press Club of Jammu and later staged sit-in on Tawi Bridge thus choking the traffic for hours.
The protestors alleged that the government is not mending its ways to address their issues as they are protesting for the last more than three months.
“If our demands will not be addressed, we will further intensify our protests and will also end our lives,” they said.
“The government representatives promised us to fulfil our demands but they were hollow slogans and nothing has been done on ground,” protesting Anganwari workers said.
The State Government utilized services of Anganwadi workers and Helpers in various Departments for implementation of Central schemes and projects, but bothered to enhance its State-share for improving socio-economic condition of Anganwari Workers and Helpers, they added.
The protestors appealed to the concerned authorities for taking necessary measures to fulfil their genuine demands at the earliest failing which the protestors would be left with no alternative than to intensify their agitation, responsibility of which will be of the Government.
State President, J&K Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, Suman Suri condemned anti-worker policies of State Government and ICDS authorities who are just shedding crocodile tears and are not serious to resolve their genuine issues.
The demands of protesting workers include PPF/GPF in favour of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers, extending benefit of medi-claim policy to Anganwadi Workers and Helpers, gratuity of Rs 5 lakh in favour of Anganwadi workers and Rs 3 lakh to Helper on superannuation, sanctioning 15 days winter vacation and 45 days summer vacation in Anganwadi Centers, promotion to the post of Supervisors, block-wise seniority lists of AWW and AWH, promotion as per seniority.
