Clashes erupt as security forces launch CASO

Srinagar, May 3: Security forces launched a Cordoned and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, where security forces burst teargas shells to disperse the stone pelting demonstrations on Thursday.
Official sources said following specific information about the presence of militants, security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint search operation at Malangpora in Pulwama on Thursday. The forces sealed all exit points and launched search operation in the area, they said.
However, people immediately hit the streets and started pelting stones on security forces to disrupt the operation. The security forces burst teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators, who were pelting stone.
The operation and clashes were still going on when the reports last came in.
Meanwhile studies were suspended at Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST), Awantipora in Pulwama in view of strike called against killing of a youth in security force firing on demonstrators in Shopian on Wednesday.
However, classes were functioning normally in Kashmir University (KU) and Central University.
“We were informed by IUST authorities that studies will be suspended today as a precautionary measure in view of killing of a youth in Shopian on Wednesday,” a student of IUST said.
Meanwhile, all examinations were held as per schedule in KU, where classes were functioning normally.
Normal classwork was also conducted in Central University.
A youth was killed and several were injured when security forces opened fire and burst teargas shells to disperse demonstrators, who hit the streets to disrupt operation against holed up militants in Shopian on Wednesday. The militants later managed to escape.
