Banks start shutting ATMs at night for ‘security reasons’

Srinagar, May 2: Most of the ATMs across Kashmir valley are no longer dispensing cash round-the-clock as banks have started to shut the facility during the night for security reasons without informing the customers, causing immense problems to the masses.
“We have been directed by the higher authorities to close ATMs from 2200 hrs to 0700 hrs the next morning for security reasons,” an ATM guard in Srinagar, who spoke on the condition of anonymity said.
However, a J&K bank spokesperson said no such directives to close the ATMs at night have been given for Kashmir valley.
People alleged that many ATMs of different banks in the summer capital, Srinagar, are closed during the night, causing inconvenience to them as no prior notice has been circulated about the same.
”I was returning from Jammu and reached Srinagar late in the night. I was running low on cash so I asked the driver to pullover at the J&K Bank ATM in Dalgate, but to my surprise the ATM was closed. It was very embarrassing as I was not able to pay the driver and had to request him to drive around Lal Chowk to withdraw the money,” Ajaz Ahmad said
A tourist from Maharashtra, Namdeo Jadav, who is visiting Kashmir valley with his family, also alleged that he had to face inconvenience as the ATM in Dal Gate was closed.
“We were returning from Songamg (world famous health resort in central Kashmir) and decided to withdraw cash from ATM as we had to leave for Pahalgam early next morning. But the ATM at Dalgate was closed. We left for Pahalgam at 0600 hrs and to our surprise the ATM was again closed,” he alleged.
Sources in State Bank of India claimed that authorities have directed closure of ATMs at some troubled areas in the valley during the night for security reasons.
Similar reports of closure of ATMs of different banks after 2200 hrs till 0700 hrs the next morning are coming from other parts of the Valley.
