Srinagar, Apr 26: Security forces resorted to aerial firing and burst teargas shells to disperse demonstrators at Awantipora on Sriangar-Jammu National Highway on Thursday afternoon.
Panic gripped Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) at Awantipora, when Army personnel resorted to aerial firing after some demonstrators pelted stones on them.
Official sources said the Army personnel were repairing some cable when the incident took place. Security forces and state police personnel were immediately rushed to the spot to control the situation as demonstrators continued stone pelting. Security forces later burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse them.
A traffic police official said that traffic on the highway was not disrupted. It was not immediately clear why the demonstrators were protesting, they said. The management of the IUST did not allow students to leave and were confined within campus. A number of girl students said that there was panic at the campus after heaving firing. We were told to remain in our class room, they said adding some of the teargas shells landed near the university.
