Soz welcomes decision to release Hurriyat leaders

SRINAGAR MAR 31: Welcoming the decision of the Central government to release Hurriyat leaders, the Congress stalwart Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz has said that Central Govt.’s interlocutor Dineshwar Sharma has characterized the release of senior Hurriyat leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq (who were under house -arrest) and M. Yaseen Malik as first of the CBMs that are under process. The interlocutor has urged the Hurriyat to be peaceful and non-violent, although Hurriyat has been known for just one weapon to show the reaction to violent incidents involving killings and that is a shutdown or what is known as Hartal (Strike). In a handout issued to media Soz stated, “I welcome the release of the Hurriyat leaders; provided that the Govt. of India utilizes this opportunity for initiating a process for a meaningful dialogue with the Hurriyat, at its earliest. In the meantime, the Hurriyat needs to be allowed to raise a dialogue and discussion with the people of the State through a process of public contact. The State and Central Governments should also go into the complaint of the senior Hurriyat leader Ashraf Sehrai that the incarceration of his son led him to take the gun and join Hizbul Mujahideen.
