SRINAGAR, MAR 31: In a second such attack on Saturday, a special police officer (SPO) who owned an eatery was shot dead by unknown gunmen near Murran Chowk in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said.
SSP Pulwama Choudhary Aslam, who identified the deceased as Muhammad Ashraf Mir, a resident of Machpona, confirmed that he was working as SPO with the Jammu and Kashmir police.
He said that Ashraf was shot at in his chest by unknown militants on a street near Murran Chowk.
He was rushed to district hospital Pulwama where he succumbed.
According to sources, the victim Muhammad Ashraf Mir was a former militant in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district who later on joined police department. He was an SPO and was presently living at Chanapora Srinagar and was running ‘Hilal Hotel and Restaurant’ in the main town Pulwama.
Reports say he was on way towards his home at Machpona after visiting a family in Dalipora when gunmen fired upon him. He was shifted to District Hospital Pulwama where he succumbed to his injuries.
Doctors treating him said that the victim had received three bullets, one in his chest, another in leg and the third one in belly.
A police official said that a case has been registered and hunt has been launched to trace the assailants.
Earlier in the day, another police officer Trilok Singh was shot at by militants in Khannabal Chowk of neighbouring Anantnag district. He was critically injured in the shooting.
According to a police official, Singh was on traffic duty in Khannabal Chowk area of Anantnag where he was fired upon by unidentified militants, leaving him injured.
