JAMMU, MAR 30: St Peter’s Catholic Church, Premnagar celebrated the Good Friday with an impressive procession taken out by the members of the Catholic Community today.
The procession, which was full of religious gaiety and fervour, started from Shaheedi Chowk through Residency Road and culminated at St Peter’s Catholic Church, Premnagar. It depicted the final Journey of Jesus Christ to the mount Calvary in Jerusalem where he was crucified two thousand years ago.
The journey was enacted by Sumit Teji of Premnagar. The important scenes from the Bible regarding the Crucifixion of Jesus were presented in the form of tableaux during the procession. Good Friday is observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday. On this day, Christians commemorate the passion or suffering and death of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross. Many Christians spend the day in fasting, prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross.
Jesus’s Crucifixion was a horribly painful and disgraceful form of capital punishment used in the ancient world. This method of execution involved binding the victim’s hands and feet and nailing them to across. Jesus Christ, the central figure of Christianity, died on a Roman cross as recorded by His disciples Mathew in the Gospel 27:27-56, Mark 15:21-38, Luke 23:26-49, and John 19:16-37. Christian theology teaches that Christ’s death provided the sacrifice for the sins all humankind.
Special prayers for the prosperity and peace in Jammu and Kashmir were offered during the occasion by Father Jose Vadakkel and Father Mohinder Paul. A special prayer service was conducted in the Church commemorating the passion and death of Jesus. Large number of devotees gathered at the Church to pray and seek blessings from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Meanwhile, St Mary’s Garrison Church also took out an impressive procession today. The procession was led by Bishop Ivan of J&K.
