Residents protest against Gammon Co for road damage

RAMBAN, MAR 26: Irked by the apathy of the executing agency Gammon India Ltd. for causing damage to the Ramban bazar- Maitra Bailey bridge link road(old NHW alignment) , residents of highway town Ramban today held a protest demonstration.
The protesters was led by General Secretary,J&K Pradesh Congress Committee, former Member Legislative Assembly,Ramban ,Ashok Kumar. The protesters included local auto drivers’ Union members besides local residents. The protesters after taking out a procession from the damaged road spot at Masjid market to the Maitra Chowk sat on a dharna for about three hours at the chowk, a junction of roads leading to the District Administrative Complex(DAC),Gool road and Chanderkot via Jaiswal bridge.
They shouted slogans against the GAMMON India Ltd., Company constructing the 1.8 Km flyover behind Ramban bazar along the Chenab bank,allegedly the negligence of which about 50 Meter of the link road has sunken thereby snapping the link to DAC and the part of town across Chenab since about a month ago.
The damage to the road has not only caused difficulties to the residents and employees but also affected the business of the auto or taxi drivers besides the shopkeepers of Masjid market.
The damage has also posed a serious threat to the NH44 passing about 50 ft above this link road.
The damage was caused due to the undermining of land below the link road during excavation for flyover. The damage was also allegedly caused to a three storey shopping complex, three houses, Madrasa building. and a part of a mosque.
The protesters dispersed after they were assured of a solution within ten days by the Tehsildar,Pramod Kumar and the Additional General Manager,GAMMON India Ltd.,AK Verma.
