Jammu, Mar 13: Two persons were arrested for attacking media persons of national news channels while they were performing their professional duties in Bhatindi area here on city outskirts. A group of miscreants on Tuesday afternoon attacked the mediapersons while they were on duty with sticks and blows. The attackers objected to the report mediapersons were covering. However, IGP Jammu Zone Dr S D Singh Jamwal said that a group of journalists was attacked by miscreants in Bathindi area following which a case under FIR number 77/2018 under sections 341, 323, 382, 34 of RPC has been registered at Trikuta Nagar Police Station. He said that two accused namely Mohammad Ashraf and Sher Mohammad, both residents of Jammu have been arrested on the basis of initial investigation. Further investigation of the case is going on, said the IGP. Meanwhile SSP Jammu Dr Vivek Gupta said, “preliminary investigations revealed that Rohingyas were not involved in any attack on journalists,” adding, “we have started investigations in the case to ascertain the exact reason behind targeting journalists.” However, Press Club of Jammu has condemned the attack. In a meeting held here the Managing Committee Secretary General, Zorawar Singh Jamwal, condemned the attack on the media persons and demanded strict action on the miscreants by the Police. “This is not the first case, in past as well, there have been cases of assault on working journalists while on duty and it is a direct attack on the fourth pillar of our democracy,” pointed out Jamwal. He also demanded that the state government must ensure safety of working journalists who are discharging their duties in militancy infested J&K while putting their life in risk. Meanwhile victim Tejinder Singh, Bureau Head, Republic TV, Jammu, said the let the police identify the miscreants and who were they? “Only two persons have been arrested. Let more arrests are made so ascertain the facts,” he added. Meanwhile Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh has condemned the attack on senior journalists while discharging their professional duties here today. In a message of solidarity with the media fraternity, Dr Singh said that these types of attacks are highly condemnable and should be condemned by every section of society.
