Leh, Mar 9: The snow clearance operation started on the side of Zojila Pass, Leh-Srinagar National Highway which connects the Ladakh region with rest of the world.
The highway was closed in December last year due to accumulation of heavy snow and slippery road conditions, after below freezing temperature.
Snow clearance operation started last week from Gangagir (12 KMs from Sonamarg), which is a stretch on this side of the Zojila Pass of 434 km long Srinagar-Leh national highway, said an official.
Somehow, people of Drass (the World’s second coldest place after Siberia) and border town of Kargil, alleged that despite less snow as compared to the previous years, the clearance operation was taken up late. They said from Drass side, the snow clearance operation by Himank almost completed last month upto its area of operation.
However, from Sonamarg, the BRO failed to start early snow clearance operation, they said.
SSP Kargil T Gyalpo informed that Srinagar-Leh highway will be reopening on March 25 and on Friday inauguration held at Spangla Top.
While sharing details about the weather condition with GJ, Sonam Lotus, Director Meteorological Department J&K said, “weather likely to remain fair and partly cloudy for next 3 days”.
“From March 12 and 13, light and moderate snowfall over the region is expected,” said Lotus.
However, there is no focus of any major snowfall from 15 to 20 days only except March 12 and March 13.
Hayat a vegetable seller told Greater Jammu that Leh-Srinagar road is opening by March 25 and they have demanded for fresh Vegetables and Fruits.
“Earlier, we brought our items on horse but from April we are expecting to bring them by vehicle and it will also prevent the stock from getting damaged,” said Hayat.
