Dawood Ibrahim keen to return to India: lawyer

Mumbai, Mar 6: Well-known criminal lawyer Shyam Keswani on Tuesday claimed that fugitive mafia don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar is reportedly “keen to return to India, but with certain pre-conditions which are not acceptable to the Union government”. Speaking to mediapersons outside the Thane court, where he represented Iqbal Ibrahim Kaskar (the absconder don’s brother) in an extortion case filed by the local police, the lawyer said among the conditions he has stipulated are that he should be lodged only in the high-secure precincts of Arthur Road Central Jail in Mumbai. “He had also conveyed his intentions through (former Union minister and eminent lawyer) Ram Jethmalani a five years ago, but the Indian government has not entertained any of his pre-conditions to return,” Keswani claimed. He said that while the Union government had approved the same condition for Abu Salem (a 1993 serial bomb blast convict), who was extradited from Portugal years back to face the blast case. The Arthur Road jail is the same prison where the Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab was lodged for nearly four years till his hanging for his role in the November 26, 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Keswani’s statement on Dawood’s desire to return came more than six months after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray had made a similar revelation in Mumbai in September last year.
