MoS’s ‘annoyance’ forces govt to resolve UIET row

JAMMU, FEB 26: The annoyance of a Junior Minister forced the government to resolve the 22-day long UIET row.
Official sources said the UIET agitation which had started 22 days ago with the gherao of the Vice Chancellor and secretariat today reached its destination with Education Minister Altaf Bukhari restoring UIET to Jammu University as its constituent college again and start the classes with immediate effect.
The problem arose when a delegation of University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) students today called on the Education Minister Altaf Bukhari at his chamber in Civil Secretariat in presence of Minister of Education Priya Sethi nut the Education Minister remained adamant on its decision of ‘hijacking’ RUSA funded constituent Engineering College of the Jammu University and refused to accept the demands of the students on the pretext that the decision has been taken by the cabinet headed by the Chief Minister. Even the MoS Priya Sethi’s insistence yield no result following which the annoyed MoS left the Bukhari’s Chamber. Later she was pacified with the assurance to accept the demands.
Later, the students had an open discussion on the UIET issue and Education Minister accepted the demands and reverted back UIET to Jammu University as a constituent college again. Principal Secretary Higher Education Asgar Samoon, Vice Chancellor Jammu University R D Sharma and Registrar Jammu University Meenakshi Kilam.
The Minister assured the students of every support from him and said, “We will go out of way to provide every concession to the children.”
It was resolved that the decision for the establishment of permanent campus of UIET shall be taken separately in a meeting scheduled on March 6 to be chaired by the Chancellor of the University of Jammu.
Altaf Bukhari assured to provide all required financial support for infrastructure, faculty and other staff to the University for running the institute. He asked the JU to submit detailed proposal for the same to be taken up with the planning department and to immediately restart the class work for the students of University Institute of Engineering Technology at the varsity campus to avoid loss of their studies.
“There will be no compromise on the career of the students and I will personally oversee the functioning of UIET. The Government will go out of way to provide every concession for the children” Altaf Bukhari said.
It is to mention that the students have been demanding to revert cabinet order for taking UIET from Jammu University and converting it into GCET Janglote which had affiliation with the Cluster University Jammu under RUSA scheme of MHRD for which the students plead that they had taken admission in Jammu University and not any cluster university. The movement had seen lathi charge, gherao of Minister, Advisor to CM and chain hunger strike of 10 days and more than 30000 students had joined this movement via signature campaign.
The movement today saw some smiles on the faces of students who called off their hunger strike in the presence of MOS Education Priya Sethi and she assured that students shall not face any problems till she is in the office and her doors are open for the students problems round the clock, said Deepak Gupta, State Secretary, ABVP, who led the delegation.
The announcement for the notice to the University as the acceptance of students demand was read by Priya Sethi which led to moment of joy amongst the students and then began the celebration, he said.
“The UIET will continue to function at Jammu University Campus Jammu as a constituent college of the Varsity and the class work should be resumed immediately purely in the interest of academic career of the students for the current session” the meeting decided.
The Minister further asked the Jammu University to hire a building in future to meet the accommodation needs till the permanent building is established.
However, it was resolved that the decision for the establishment of permanent campus of UIET shall be taken separately in a meeting scheduled on March 6 to be chaired by the Chancellor of the University of Jammu.
Meanwhile, Team Jammu today condemned unprovoked brutal lathi-charge and excessive use of force on the students agitating for genuine demands, blamed BJP leadership especially Deputy Chief Minister Dr Kumar Nirmal Singh for bartering Jammu’s interests for petty personal gains.
Chairman of Team Jammu Zorawar Singh Jamwal expressed surprise that despite being in power, BJP Ministers have given freehand to its coalition partner PDP to cheat Jammu region with one way or other. It was all due to consent of BJP Ministers especially Deputy Chief Minister that state government has decided to take away UIET from Jammu University, he said.
