CM inaugurates 30th Police-Public Mela

JAMMU, FEB 25: Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti inaugurated the 30th Police-Public Mela at Gulshan Grounds here today. A large number of people from different walks of life attended the fair, which is held twice every year in the capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu.
After inaugurating the mela, Mehbooba Mufti paid floral tributes to the jawans and officers of J&K Police who laid down their lives while performing their duties.
The Chief Minister went many stalls and appreciated the quality of products from all the three regions of the State put on display.
Organized by Jammu & Kashmir Police Wives Welfare Association (JKPWWA), as many as 53 stalls have been set up by various Police establishment centres in the Mela.
The fair aims at generating resources for the welfare of the wards and families of jawans and officers of Police Department.
Director General of Police, S. P. Vaid; several ADsGP, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu and other senior officers were present on the occasion.
Also present were Chairperson, JKPWWA, Mrs. Bharti Vaid and members of JKPWWA.
There were a number of attractions including cultural programmes, amusement for the children, besides a large number of stalls displaying different variety of items of different places of the state.
There was a lot of hustle and bustle as people from different walks of life participated in huge numbers in the mela. Artists from different districts of Jammu and Kashmir presented a number of songs and pipe, brass band played number of tunes which enthralled the people.
The main highlight of the mela, the raffle draw was conducted at 4 p.m in which 8968 prizes were announced which included 24 cars and other high end gifts.
Addressing a large gathering of people, the DGP thanked them for making this mela a huge success. He thanked the PWWA members and different units of J&K police for making excellent arrangements which helped in making the mela a huge success. He also praised the performance of the artists. He congratulated the winners and hoped that the people will continue their patronization of this mega police- public partnership event.

Winners have been advised to approach AIG (Welfare) PHQ, along with original tickets during office hours to collect the prizes.
Painting competition, which was a part of the mela was also held and the results declared. Gunman kills separatist leader’s police guard in Soura
SRINAGAR, FEB 25: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a police guard of a senior separatist leader in the city outskirts late Sunday evening, official sources said.
They said gunmen shot at and critically wounded a police guard of separatist leader Fazul Haq Qureshi at Bilal Colony, Soura in the city outskirts. The gunmen, who fired at police guard Farooq Ahmad Itoo, from a very close range also escaped with his service weapon. The injured was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead. (AGENCIES)
