SRINAGAR, FEB 14: At a time when Power Development Department authorities are claiming to have tightened noose around the common consumers for power thefts, the misuse of electricity goes unabated in government offices.
The government offices, who are owing crores to PDD, are using heaters without any fear and the department has failed to take any action against this illegal use of electricity.
As per official records, several government departments and security posts owe as much as Rs 1892 crore to PDD on account of electricity bills by October 2017.
As per information, government forces owe more than Rs 9 crore in its share of Rs 802 crore that departments in Kashmir division owe to the government.
Moreover, PDD owes Rs 7.76 crore to its own department in Jammu only.
Despite owing crores to PDD, authorities have miserably failed to get a single penny from the defaulting departments. Many political workers putting up in government quarters owe lakhs to the department. Despite repeated reminders, they are least bothered to clear pending bills, an official working in PDD Division Awantipora Pulwama, said.
He added that rules are only for common consumers but PDD officials don’t dare to touch security forces and political workers.
He added that despite owing crores to the department they are being provided with 24×7 power supply and are using illegal appliances but common consumers who clear their bills on time didn’t get power as per schedule which is injustice with common consumers.
During winters, the power scenario in Kashmir turns very bad. This year it turned worse as people from every nook and corner of Valley are up against PDD department for failing to provide them with scheduled power supply.
As per officials, the demand for power in Kashmir Valley is more than 1700 MW but the existing capacity is only 1250 MW.
