Jammu, Oct 2: Two children were killed and nine civilians injured as Pakistani Army today fired unprovoked and shelled forward border villages and Indian posts along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Pakistani Army this morning violated ceasefire agreement and fired unprovoked, targeted forward Indian posts and villages,” official sources here said.
They said small arms and mortars were fired which landed Qasba and Kerni villages of Poonch.
Minor boy namely Ashfaq Ahmed, 9, a resident of Naka Qasba and Yasmeen Akhter,15, a resident of Degwar were killed in the shelling while nine other civilians also sustained injuries out of which three critically injured were shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu.
The injured were identified as Saleema, 45, Soheeb Akhtar, 11, Mohd Sadiq, 35, Yasar, 12, Mohammad Sadiq, 45, Muneer Hussain, 45, Mohd Rafiq, 38, Reshmabi, 70.
“Indian Army gave befitting reply to the ceasefire violation,” they said.
Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh termed the unprovoked ceasefire violation by the Pakistan as ‘coward act.’ “Pakistan is a terrorist state. On one hand it is showing white flags but on the other, targeting innocent civilians.”
Dr Singh, however, said Army is giving befitting reply to them. On September 30, a tunnel dug by Pakistan was found by the BSF along international border in Arnia sector. An infiltration attempt was also foiled by the BSF troops.
On September 29, Pakistani Rangers and BSF held flag meeting and agreed to maintain calm and tranquility along the border.
Chief Minister, Mehbboba Mufti has expressed grief and anguish over the killing of three minors during cross LoC shelling in various parts of Poonch district today.
In a statement, the Chief Minister said that it is very unfortunate that these teenagers became victims of fire power when they were yet to understand the nuances of politics.
The Chief Minister has directed the district administration to ensure specialized treatment to the people injured in the shelling.
Deputy Chief Minister while expressing sympathy with the families of those killed prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls.
Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs and Information, Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali has expressed grief and anguish over the loss of precious human lives in cross-border shelling in Poonch today.
He expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and assured every possible support from the government to the affected people
Minister asked the district administration to reach out to the people affected by the shelling and provide all possible help to enable them to cope with the distressing situation.
He strongly condemned targeting of civilian areas and resorting to repeated ceasefire violations from across the border and said that the cross-border shelling has seen a humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region with loss of precious human lives.
J&K Pradesh Congress Committee has strongly condemned the continued cease fire violations and unprovoked Pak shelling on Indian positions and civilian areas in the State.
PCC Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said that it is tragic that Pakistan has repeatedly violating ceasefire and it was so unfortunate that the unwarranted firing in Poonch Sector last night has resulted in the killing of two persons and injuring 10 others and also killing/injuring several cattle and damaging houses and property.
Sharma lashed out at Pakistan for repeated ceasefire violations and expressed deep anguish at the killing of innocent persons besides causing great loss to property.
He demanded all necessary measures for the safety of people and all sorts of provisions for timely medical facilities to meet the unfortunate happening. But it was unfortunate that present PDP-BJP Govt. is non- serious in such matters and does not care the border area people.
He termed the Centre and State Govt. a total failure on all fronts and blamed it for the present situation of the State.
Sharma has also demanded adequate compensation to the victims of firing and specialized medical treatment to the injured people. He also demanded the government to immediately fulfill the promise of allotting of plots to the identified population of IB & LOC as per promise in order to accommodate them in safer zones so that the innocent lives are saved from Pak firing.
