GJ Report
Jammu, Sep 23: Coming down heavily on National Conference and Congress, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister today slammed both the parties for failing in their 70 years rule to declare state holiday on September 23, the birth anniversary of last Dogra ruler-Maharaja Hari Singh.
“Congress and National Conference are politicizing Maharaja’s Hari Singh’s birth anniversary,” Dr Singh here said.
He said, “opportunist Congress, National Conference and other political parties failed to declare September 23, the birth anniversary Maharaja Hari Singh, as a public holiday when in power since 1947.”
The Deputy Chief Minister said that Congress and NC have ruled the state till 2014 but these parties never ever commemorated the last ruler Maharaja Hari Singh birth anniversary and his contribution to the development of J&K.
“In fact NC under Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and Congress under Jawahar Lal Nehru conspired to keep Maharaja Hari Singh out of J&K, after the accession of the state with India,” said the BJP leader.
He further added that it was the BJP that got the resolution moved by the grandson of ex-Maharaja a BJP legislator Ajatshatru Singh in the Upper House of Jammu and Kashmir Legislature in January this year for declaring Maharaja’s Hari Singh’s birth anniversary a holiday.
Both NC and Congress are dynastic parties, and they commemorated their dynasties whether naming institutes or commemorating the birth or death anniversaries, he said.
“We will keep fighting for declaring holiday on September 23 and the matter will also be raised in the state cabinet,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that BJP is the party that celebrated Accession Day every year and installed Maharaja Hari Singh’s statute in Jammu when Kavinder Gupta was the Mayor of Jammu.
Earlier in the morning Dr Singh paid tributes to Maharaja Hari Singh on his 123rd birthday at a function here.
He lauded the contribution of Maharaja Hari Singh towards welfare and development of J&K State and said, “the Maharaja carried out development policies and reforms for amelioration of deprived segments of the society and it was because of his statesmanship that today we are part of a great nation.”
Highlighting the works performed and schemes implemented by Maharaja Hari Singh during his regime, the Speaker said that his contribution in socio-political and socio-economic reforms in the State for bringing the Jammu and Kashmir at par with other progressive states is highly laudable. He also lauded Maharaja for doing away with many social evils for the welfare of the public.
Speaking on the occasion, Priya Sethi remembered the selfless services rendered by Maharaja Hari Singh for betterment of the State. She said that Maharaja was a social reformer, a true patriot and a great visionary who worked for women education, banning of child marriage, abolishing of un-touchability, free education for all, promotion of widows marriage besides uplift of weaker sections of the society.
