Gujarat RS Polls: EC declares two Congress votes invalid

Ahmadabad: The Election Commission on Tuesday night ordered rejection of the votes of two rebel Congress MLAs in the Gujarat Rajya Sabha elections, giving a new twist to the outcome involving Congress President’s political secretary Ahmed Patel.
The order by chief election commissioner AKJoti and election commissioner OP Rawat came after a high-pitch battle between the BJP and the Congress over the votes of Bhola Bhai Gohil and Raghavji Bhai Patel, who had voted for the BJP and showed their ballots to BJP party chief Amit Shah and union minister Smriti irani, who are also candidates.
Gujarat has three vacancies and the ruling BJP has fielded Amit Shah, Smriti Irani and Congress turncoat Balwantsinh Rajput. Of them, two are set to win, given the BJP’s strength of 122 lawmakers in the assembly.
For the third seat, Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Patel is up against Rajput. (Agencies)
