Major infiltration bid foiled, 5 militants killed in Machil

Srinagar, Aug 7: Five militants were killed as alert troops foiled yet another major infiltration bid from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in Machil sector in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara.
An Army official said that troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from PoK in Machil sector in north Kashmir today.
However, when challenged and asked to surrender, the militants resorted to indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. Troops also retaliated and in the ensuing gun battle, five militants were killed.
He said five weapons were also recovered. “The operation was going on when the reports last came in,” he said, adding the entire forest area near the LoC has been sealed after reinforcement was rushed from nearby camps.
Meanwhile a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant from Pakistan was today killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Kashmir.
The militant identified as Umar was part of the Abu Ismail group of Kashmir, which is behind the July 10 attack on Amarnath pilgrims that left eight devotees dead and several others injured, a police official said.
The official said that security forces launched a cordon and search operation in village Samboora late last night following information about presence of militants there.
The search party of forces was fired upon by militants triggering a gunbattle, the official said.
One militant was killed in the encounter, he said.
