JAMMU, Jul 1: Hundreds of traders today took out a protest march and gheraoed Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta, demanding implementation of Goods and Service Tax in Jammu and Kashmir.
Shouting slogans, traders from Nehru Market, this afternoon took out a rally demanding rolling out of the GST in the state. Meanwhile, agitating traders ‘gheraoed’ the Speaker who was on his way to his residence.
“Government has decided to bring in the Bill in the Assembly but the decision will be taken only after the four-day special session from July 4 which will debate on GST,” Gupta told reporters here. He said there was no clarity in the state on Income Tax but if it gets passed in the Assembly, it will be in the interest of the State.
“Once it is passed unanimously, nobody can oppose not even those raising objections on its implementation,” said the Speaker.
Pertinent to mention here that Jammu and Kashmir has missed the July 1 deadline but special session from July 4 to 8 will be held in Srinagar to hold discussions on its implementation in the state.
Addressing the protest demonstration President Rajesh Gupta said that it is very unfortunate that till date State Govt failed to implement GST as it is already rolled out in the entire Country.
“The failure of J&K Govt has created a chaos among the business community as traders are not importing the goods because their GST numbers are still invalid and they cannot import the goods without it,” they said.
General Secretary of the Federation Deepak Gupta said, “We are very surprised to note the delay on the part of our Govt. when they are well aware of the losses to the state economy, Trade Industry as well as the consumers by not implementing GST in J&K State.”
Federation also requested to the Govt to abolish Toll Tax when GST will be implemented in the State so that Goods should not get costlier.
